Yoshinori Kitase would like a remake of Final Fantasy VIII done by younger staff

Yoshinori Kitase, the director of the original Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII has been serving as producer on Final Fantasy VII Remake for nearly six years.

Following the recent release of Final Fantasy VIII Remastered and with the first part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake series' release months away, Famitsu asked about a potential remake for Final Fantasy VIII.

Kitase answered: “If the youth that inherits the genes of Final Fantasy can step up and do it, then I’d like to see it made. For Final Fantasy VII Remake, the project started from my desire to make Final Fantasy VII with today’s technology while I’m still here at Square Enix. So I’d like to see it [Final Fantasy VIII Remake] done by the youth of Square Enix.”

This is completely fair from Kitase. Kitase is in his early 50s and Final Fantasy VII Remake still has at least two more games to release after the first one. So in the end it will have taken at least a decade. Kitase probably doesn't want to spend the rest of his career remaking games.

Kitase's next main project after Final Fantasy VII Remake has appeared to be Final Fantasy X-3 for years following scenario writer Kazushige Nojima and character designer Tetsuya Nomura's desire to continue the story in 2013 after it was left complete for close to a decade.

In recent times Kitase has spoken multiple times about how members of his team and staff from the Final Fantasy X series have expressed enthusiasm to do it but they cannot do it until VII Remake is done.

Personally speaking this is great to hear. Final Fantasy VII Remake will end up having taken far too long and taking up too much for something that's still perfectly playable on all modern platforms. The sooner it's done, the sooner they can close the X series up again and finally make a new mainline game.
