Square Enix has announced that the Final Fantasy XI spin-off, Final Fantasy Grandmasters will be shut down on April 25, 2019.

The spin-off is/was a full scale online RPG for iOS and Android, developed by Crooz (known for Knights of Avalon).

It was announced during the "Vana’diel Project” presentation in March 2015 that was the sort of curtain call for Final Fantasy XI.

Chief among this was the Rhapsodies of Vana’diel scenario for the original game that served as the finale to the game. This was released later that year and served as the ending to the game. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2 versions of the game were shut down months later. The PC version is still running and receiving monthly updates to this day.

The other thing announced was of course Final Fantasy XI Mobile Project, a sort of reboot of Final Fantasy XI for mobile devices developed by Nexon. Other than a few small details revealed by Business Division 5 (the studio incharge of Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XI) head Naoki Yoshida in interviews and a few screenshots released by Nexon, news has been quiet ever since.

Final Fantasy Grandmasters was launched in Japan on October 1, 2015 but never seemed to gain a big following.

Square Enix featured screenshots of it in the North American press release for the "Vana’diel Project” and shared some details about it but didn't outright confirm a release outside of Japan. Meaning it was probably something they were planning if it did well and there was demand.

The game will have ended up lasting about 3 and a half years which to be honest isn't bad considering most of Square Enix's free-to-play games last about a year on average.

Best case scenario is they ended up using this game to help with the development of Final Fantasy XI Mobile. But only time will tell and it's been a lot of time since that was first announced.
