TGS 2008 Sum-Up: We Got Dissidia Drinks
If you thought TGS was underwhelming, well, you wouldn't be too far off. A lot of news did come out of TGS from Square Enix, and for those who weren't watching the play-by-play, here's a Final Fantasy Union TGS 08 Re-cap.
The most prominent title at TGS in terms of news was Dissidia: Final Fantasy, so that's where we'll kick this round-up off.
Dissidia: Final Fantasy
Dissidia seemed to be at the front lines of Square Enix's Final Fantasy announcements for TGS this year. First up, Square Enix confirmed Cloud Strife of FFVII and Terra Branford of FFVI are in-fact in Dissidia. While Cloud is once again being voiced by Sakurai Takahiro, Terra is being voiced for the first time by Yukari Fukui.
For little known reason SE decided to announce characters for Dissidia like some sort of curve ball was expected from one of the titles represented in the game; taking a page from how they promote Kingdom Hearts. The only slight change to the line-up was the inclusion of Jecht of FFX.
SE also announced their ongoing equivalent to Halo 3's GameFuel, Dissidia Final Fantasy Potion. Basically a canned soft-drink line-up with portraits of each of the characters from the title. Potion pop-tabs will be hitting Japanese FF gamers' thumbs alongside Dissidia in December.
IGN got short-lived but passionate hands-on time with Dissidia at the event as well. IGN loved the title last year when they got their mitts on it for the first time and this time around, they loved it just a bit more. IGN's Ryan Clements concludes that, "Although I only just scratched the surface of what Dissidia has to offer, considering all the special techniques, wall running and aerial combos to be found, this is a PSP title that should not be missed."
Crystallis
Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII also popped out of whatever hole they are hiding in for a moment at TGS to the sighs of fans everywhere. First off, we learnt the names of Versus' lead characters; the protagonist being Noctis, and the dashing blonde being Stella. Both titles also saw new and hidden-from-the-public trailers. Nothing to drive you to sit on the edge of your seats, but to take a gander, check out the Final Fantasy XIII TGS 2008 Trailer Impressions and the Final Fantasy Versus XIII TGS 2008 Trailer Impressions pages.
Lucky for us (to a degree you can determine) Final Fantasy Agito XIII is no longer standing out in the rain from SE events, at least in the leaks department. Some generous and sly fan recorded the Final Fantasy Agito XIII trailer and seeded it to Youtube like any good fan should. Make sure to check it out, there's CG and in-game footage abound! SE also showed off a nifty little Final Fantasy Agito XIII poster at the event.
Conclusion
Overall, no big announcements on the Final Fantasy front this year. TGS 08 seemed like the one event fans all year could count on for Final Fantasy XIII news. However, even though they've been starved for well over a year without any major developments, Square Enix still didn't throw them a bone.
As they say at the end of most of those events, here's hoping for next time.
