With the game only a short time away from its official launch, Square Enix have decided to launch the official website to accompany the Final Fantasy XIII OST, which has been composed by Masashi Hamauzu.
It offers samples of 10 tracks at the moment, but more should be added as time goes by. There are also plans to include a short commentary from Masashi Hamauzu himself.
Along with previews of some of the songs, there is also a look at the two different version of the soundtrack that wil be sold - standard and first cut limited edition. The standard version will retail for 3,990 Yen and the limited edition will retail for 5,250 Yen. They're both scheduled to be released on the 27th of January, 2010
I think the tracklist that is being "previewed" by Square Enix can be found under the "Tracklist" button on the menu.
I must say, I'm quite impressed by what I hear. (This sounds a ton better than FFXII music already.)

Darryl: They've just announced the official site for this: LINK
Very powerful, dignified, and scary music. Alone the music is stunning enough but some of the music for me was actually hard to picture. But it will all work out eventually.
My favorite track, was number 10 "Is it Okay to Free." Followed closely by #2, the FInal Fantasy ~piano~. I think that a piano just suits this game all to well, I can feel a lot of despair from th...e characters and a slow piano just makes sense.

About $55 for the 5CD Limited Edition or $40 for the Regular one isn't too bad really.
(Price checked from both YesAsia & CDJapan)

What about you guys?
I might wait until it comes out in the UK. I cba to import an OST I think. :/

Just to confirm, I was referencing bit rate of compressed audio, not download bandwidth.
squirrelking101 has it down for all the technical babble. ^_^

I'm thinking a limit of 1.2 Gb,
assuming they keep all of their data on CD's uncompressed.
The size of file downloads, specifically when it comes to songs, is usually determined by how complex it is, and the number of tracks added into a single song adds alot to the size.
It doesn't just include the number of tracks to form the song. It includes the frequencies played in each of tracks and the limit of the compression.
When compressing, certain frequencies are nullified which is why when compressed you lose the very high end and a bit of the low. This can be most obvious when you try to turn up a song that has been super compressed; y...ou can't hear a clear bass and it may seem like the Subwoofer is doneski, but in fact it is just the source being bad.
So next is the classification of those compressions which can be characterized by bandwidth. ".mp3" is a compression style but is a certain file type, the compression becomes evident when characteristics such as 128 kbps, 320 kbps, and other like it. It is just the amount of information being transferred. Higher IS better, during the transfer rate, the amount of frequencies being played in the song is increased.
The amount of information (^) + buttload of songs = Big File
Linear PCM 5.1 (What XIII has on box) = 768 kbps or 1509 kbps I think.
Dinner, I'll continue later ^_^

Caleb: No, I think you are getting confused. Here is an example, the 2nd latest OCremix album is 1GB to download, regardless of internet speed, that is the size it is to download the entire album, and its only 25 tracks. The only thing your internet speed determines is how fast you download it not the size of the download itself. The size of file downloads, specifically when it comes to songs, is usually determined by how complex it is, and the number of tracks added into a single song adds alot to the size.
Now that I think about it, a few gigs was away off, A more accurate guess is somewhere around 600 MB's.
I think your getting confused, kbps is referring to the quality of the audio files, and therefore the size. It means that in a second 320kbs are used, so 6 seconds of that would be 1920kb in size. The more kbs played in a second, the more information, the better the quality generally speaking.

Astharis: I still think that 320kbps is completely and utterly listenable on speakers/headphones that most people are likely to have in their homes.
A 4 disc OST would be less than a GB at that rate.

Yeah, I've never seen what the big deal with lossless audio is to be honest. 320Kbps is fine for me as an absolute maximum, although I do tend to just stick with 192.

Caleb: The only thing about downloading a torrent of this OST is it would be massive!. A few gigs for sure. And I know that isn't that bad actual size wise, but unless you have really fast Internet it would take forever.
It is going to be huge is they maintain the lossless audio... but I am ready.

squirrelking101: meh, to me OST's can be passed up. They are something that I would probably rip to my computer and put on my ipod. I still have the Full Metal Alchemist OST of every season and it never got past the upper right cubby hole of my desk.
Torrent the OST
Buy the posters / figures.

If the music is like FF12 then I will have to pass.

The only FF OST I actually own is FFX, though at one point I was gonna get the X-2 one. I might get this one if the music's any good, as I wasn't really all that impressed by FFXII's soundtrack.

I haven't bought a full FF OST since VIII, but this looks like a nice bit of merch to import.
Not that I'm interested in anything XIII... >_> <_<
