Dissidia: Terra's EX-Mode Revealed
(Posted: 29/10/2008) by Ronin90
Terra was revealed to the world at last month's Tokyo Game Show and many hypothesised about the nature of her EX-Mode. I think most assumed that it would tie in with Final Fantasy VI, and they assumed correctly, as can be seen in the latest scan from V-Jump Magazine.

Kefka is also featured in the scan, but we already know all about him.

Get Your Final Fantasy VII T-Shirts
(Posted: 26/10/2008) by Ronin90
Yes, you heard correctly; Square Enix have placed some Final Fantasy VII t-shirts in their Japanese store. There is one t-shirt for Final Fantasy VII and one for Advent Children, so you're definitely spoilt for choice.
They're going to retain for ¥5,200 each, which is actually quite a lot of money for a t-shirt, so I wouldn't recommend purchasing one unless you're a seriously die hard fan.

Final Fantasy Agito XIII Deserves Your Attention
(Posted: 26/10/2008) by Ronin90
Up until June this year, nobody was really all that concerned with Final Fantasy Agito XIII, primarily because they thought they'd never even get to play it. Production on the game only started because Before Crisis was so successful, so Agito was definitely an afterthought with regards to the Fabula Nova Crystallis franchise and Square Enix hoped to repeat the success in Japan gain.
However, when Square Enix announced that they would in fact be releasing Agito on the PSP, interest was suddenly gained and since then it has increased considerably. So much so, that Final Fantasy Agito XIII could be a massive title for the PSP in 2009 and it's no longer just an afterthought, it's arguably on par with its sister titles.

Some new Final Fantasy XIII screenshots have hit the internet in Japan and they feature some of the characters that will appear in the game. Snow and Lightning are featured, as well as Pigtails Girl in the first few screenshots, while the final screenshot shows off the new potential villain.

Normally we're used to Famitsu magazine posting lots of tasty treats, but this time it's the turn of their website to provide some new information in the form of four screenshots which show off different aspects of the game.

The last screenshot shows off the new ATB (Active Time Battle) system, which is described as the "Ultra-High Final Fantasy VII ATB", which will be used in the single player mode and ad-hoc.

Cloud Says: New FFVII Compilation Game On The Way?
(Posted: 23/10/2008) by Ronin90
A picture of Cloud with the words "Coming Soon" that was released a few days ago toyed with Final Fantasy fans all around the world, but while some speculated that it could mean the announcement of a Final Fantasy VII Remake, I'm going to disagree.
To me, the announcement of a Cloud Volume II DVD is far more logical, but what would make more sense is the announcement of a new game in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII franchise. Cloud in the picture is wearing his new attire and if you think about the ending of Dirge of Cerberus, it makes sense that Square Enix are definitely planning another title.
For those who aren't aware, Dirge of Cerberus introduced the now well recognised Genesis Rhapsodos, but under the name of G. He appeared at the end of the game saying that they still have work to do. Following this, he was then given a starring role in Crisis Core, which shed more light on to his character.

Snow Villiers Confirmed As Full Final Fantasy XIII Character Name
(Posted: 22/10/2008) by Ronin90
Yesterday we posted some scans from the latest edition of V-Jump Magazine, but now we have some scans from Famitsu which show off a little bit more detail about certain things, namely Final Fantasy XIII Character names.
The main finding is that while last week Mr. 33cm was confirmed was Snow, now he's been given a surname and is called Snow Villiers, which makes the name sound a little bit more respectable.

Noctis and Stella are both discussed in the Versus section, while the Agito scan also shows off much more in-game footage primarily focussed around the combat system. Unfortunately there is little information talked about with respects to the individual characters in the game.

Some new scans have been posted on the internet from the current issue of V-Jump Magazine in Japan which show off Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII.
The screens are all supposed to be from the DKΣ3713 event, as well as this year's TGS and they show off a range of things from characters to real-time footage (Agito).

Final Fantasy XIII Poster Now Available
(Posted: 19/10/2008) by Ronin90
After showcasing these posters at numerous events in the past, Square Enix has finally put a Final Fantasy XIII poster up for sale, alongside a Final Fantasy Versus XIII poster.

While that's perfectly fine, and it's good that they've made them available to purchase, they do have an exceedingly hefty price tag of ¥1,000. I guess beggers can't be choosers when buying posters is concerned.

Remember, These Final Fantasy XIII Character Names Are Just Aliases
(Posted: 19/10/2008) by Ronin90
A few days ago a Shonen Jump Magazine scan revealed that Lightning wasn't the only character to have a codename for the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII, as the previously named Mr. 33cm (due to his shoe size) has also been given a codename.
However, while fans completely accepted Lightning's name, the reaction hasn't been overly positive with regards to the new name for our Blonde protagonist.
After reading some forums, the general concensus that that Mr. 33cm's new codename - Snow - is just really weak and it doesn't suit his looks or stature at all. The only possible link is that he rides Shiva, who is of course the Summon which represents the element of Ice, but even with that, it's still very underwhelming. I think it could only really have been worse if they'd have called him Sleet, which they may still do and if that happens, I definitely coined it here.

Mr. 33cm Gets A New Codename - Snow
(Posted: 16/10/2008) by Ronin90
In an advanced preview of next week's Shonen Jump there is a small feature on Fabula Nova Crystallis - primarily some of the characters which will be featured in the games. The main headline is that the aptly named Mr. 33cm now has an official codename, much like Lightning. His new codename will be Snow, which to be honest isn't exactly that endearing.

TGS 2008 Sum-Up: We Got Dissidia Drinks
(Posted: 14/10/2008) by Kyle Wynen
If you thought TGS was underwhelming, well, you wouldn't be too far off. A lot of news did come out of TGS from Square Enix, and for those who weren't watching the play-by-play, here's a Final Fantasy Union TGS 08 Re-cap.
The most prominent title at TGS in terms of news was Dissidia: Final Fantasy, so that's where we'll kick this round-up off.
Dissidia: Final Fantasy
Dissidia seemed to be at the front lines of Square Enix's Final Fantasy announcements for TGS this year. First up, Square Enix confirmed Cloud Strife of FFVII and Terra Branford of FFVI are in-fact in Dissidia. While Cloud is once again being voiced by Sakurai Takahiro, Terra is being voiced for the first time by Yukari Fukui.

FFXII & FFXIII Characters In Dissidia? Why Not?
(Posted: 13/10/2008) by Ronin90
Although the official cast list for Dissidia has now been confirmed and games ranging from Final Fantasy I to Final Fantasy X will be the only ones to have featured characters, that doesn't mean there isn't scope for characters from other games to appear.
Square Enix has never been shy about having characters appear as cameos and/or unlockables and there is a strong possibility that they could do the same with Dissidia: Final Fantasy.
The most obvious example of this would be Kingdom Hearts; a game developed by Square Enix which has a completely unique cast, Disney characters and Final Fantasy characters too. Throughout the franchise, a multitude of characters have appeared in cameo roles and even characters from Final Fantasy X-2 have featured.

Square Enix Do Have Loyalty: To Their Wallets
(Posted: 12/10/2008) by Ronin90
Much has been said recently about Square Enix turning their back on Sony, as in the last 6 months, Square Enix have seemed to shift camps and now appear to be courting Microsoft much more than anyone else. This is primarily down to the shock announcement revolving around Final Fantasy XIII, when at E3 earlier this year, Square Enix announced that it was no longer a Playstation 3 exclusive in North America and Europe.
Further rumours have been abound recently due to the Tokyo Game Show 2008, where Microsoft had its booth right next to where Square Enix set up. Comments from Yoichi Wada during his keynote speech also helped to ignite the fire, but the question is, where do Square Enix's loyalties actually lie? Is this all being blown completely out of proportion?

Final Fantasy Versus XIII TGS 2008 Trailer Impressions
(Posted: 10/10/2008) by Ronin90
Quite a lot of new footage was shown in the new Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer and it shows Noctis (the new name for the Prince) in a slightly different light to trailers seen in the past.
The trailer itself starts in a similar fashion, with Noctis sitting in a car listening to the news. However, this is where things change. The trailer then shifts to in-game footage, which shows Noctis wearing a lovely black suit. It appears that he's on some kind of date, as the girl with blonde hair who has appeared in previous trailers greets him while wearing a cocktail dress.
Following this in-game sequence, the trailer heads back to the safety of pre-rendered sequences; the first of which shows a council of aged men, which are probably all from countries that have banded together against Noctis.
Other new footage focusses on Noctis' three friends, which have been shown briefly in other trailers. This is the last of the new footage though, as the rest is all made up from previous trailers.
So, in short - The in-game footage looked easily on a par with Final Fantasy XIII's, but there doesn't appear to be any voice acting done yet, as the characters were using Japanese subtitles to communicate with each other. There was also no mention of a release date, so we could be looking at a 2010 release in Japan.

Final Fantasy XIII TGS 2008 Trailer Impressions
(Posted: 10/10/2008) by Ronin90
The trailer for Final Fantasy XIII has been shown at this year's Tokyo Game Show 2008. As expected from Square Enix based on what they've done over the past 2 years, most of the trailer was just re-hashed bits from old trailers. However, there was some new footage of sorts.
The first scene is a slightly extended version of a previous scene including "Pigtails Girl", who is now known as either Sarah or Seron. It highlights the landscape that's surrounding her, which actually looks very prehistoric, with what looks like dinosaurs around her.
Following this, there is no footage which reveals two new character, who both appear to be a villains. One is male, while the other is female and they both seem to be working for the Cocoon military.
The rest of the trailer contains similar footage to that of old, and at the end there is a tag line which reiterates that Final Fantasy XIII is still Playstation 3 exclusive in Japan and it will be released in 2009 in Japan.

IGN Hands-On With Dissidia
(Posted: 10/10/2008) by Ronin90
When IGN got to play Final Fantasy Dissidia this time last year at Tokyo Game Show 2007, they absolutely loved the game, so has much changed in a year?
It doesn't seem so at all, as Ryan Clements commented that Dissidia for the PSP is a must have title and his only regret was that he didn't get to spend longer playing the game. Apparently the queues were quite long, which is a good sign.
Here is Ryan's conclusion from his time with the game:
"Although I only just scratched the surface of what Dissidia has to offer, considering all the special techniques, wall running and aerial combos to be found, this is a PSP title that should not be missed."

Now that the images have been released into the public domain, we are happy to put these images back up on the site. We hope you enjoy them as much as we did when we first saw them.

Dissidia: Final Fantasy Potion Announced
(Posted: 09/10/2008) by Ronin90
To continue a long line of tradition that Square Enix started a while back, Dissidia: Final Fantasy will be receiving a line of soft drinks to tie-in with its launch in December.
They will be released on the 19th of December, like the game, but some of the can's designs haven't been announced yet. What is clear though, is that there will be one drink per game, with the front featuring one character and the back featuring another (as shown in the screenshot below).

It looks like the drinks are going to retail for ¥191.

Dissidia: Terra & Cloud Confirmed
(Posted: 09/10/2008) by Ronin90
Footage from the Closed Mega Theatre at Square Enix's section in the Tokyo Game Show has been divulged and there is good (but obvious news) that both Terra (from Final Fantasy VI) and Cloud Strife (Final Fantasy VII) have been announced for Final Fantasy Dissidia.
There is no video or imagery to confirm this as yet, so you'll have to take our word on this, but Cloud will again be voiced in the Japanese version by Sakurai Takahiro. Terra, having a voice actress for the first time, will be voiced by Yukari Fukui.
The footage from the trailer showed Cloud squaring off against his arch-nemesis Sephiroth, but the context of Terra's appearance is unclear as of yet.

Dissidia: Cloud, Terra & Bartz To Be Announced?
(Posted: 06/10/2008) by Ronin90
Nikkei's "TrendyNet" recently conducted an interview with the Senior Director of Dissidia: Final Fantasy - Ken Arawaka and one of the most pertinent pieces of information that he revealed is that we should expect to hear more about the unannounced characters from Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy VII at the Tokyo Game Show in a few days time. Could this mean that Terra, Bartz, and Cloud Strife will finally be unveiled to the world?
Arawaka also revealed information about the demo that will be playable at TGS, explaining that it will have 6 playable characters.

New Dissidia Gameplay Footage Explains HP System
(Posted: 06/10/2008) by Ronin90
Two new videos have been released on the Square Enix's official Dissidia: Final Fantasy website which attempt to explain the system by which Hit Points (HP) and Brave Points work.
The characters "share" Brave Points, not HP. There are two types of attacks
in Dissidia, Brave Attacks and HP Attacks. Brave Attacks will steal your
opponents Brave Points and add them to your own. An HP Attack does damage to
your opponents HP equal to that of your Brave Points and using up your Brave
Points in the process.
By attacking your opponents Brave and reducing it to
Zero, you will send them in to Break status. This will award you the Brave
Points found between the two health bars on the screen. Once a player enters
Break, their Brave points will start to recover automatically, but they will
not be able to do any HP Damage until they exit Break status after a period
of time.
Anyway, videos after the jump.

Square Enix At TGS 2008: What To Expect
(Posted: 05/10/2008) by Ronin90
The Tokyo Game Show hits town at the end of next week, so I thought it would be the perfect time to talk about what Final Fantasy fans should be looking to expect from Japan's premier gaming expo.
The first glaring observation is that while there are 25 games (excluding Advent Children Complete) on show from Square Enix at the event, only 6 are Final Fantasy orientated, and one of them - Final Fantasy XI - isn't exactly a new kid on the block. Also, out of the 9 games that will be playable, only 2 are Final Fantasy tites - Dissidia: Final Fantasy for the PSP and Final Fantasy IV: The After for Mobile Phone devices. It seems slightly odd that Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time isn't even going to be displayed by Square Enix considering it is supposed to be released at the start of 2009, but given the fact it was only announced earlier this week, I guess it's to be expected.

While Trailer 2 came out a little while ago, we felt that it would be a good idea to try and highlight some crucial points that appeared during the trailer. This may be pointing out characters who people might not know, or by talking about aspects of the game which may or may not be in the final product.
Hopefully a Trailer 3 analysis will be coming soon in the near future, so keep your eyes peeling for that one.

Echoes of Time Wii vs Echoes of Time DS
(Posted: 02/10/2008) by Ronin90
After Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time was announced yesterday in Shonen Jump, Square Enix followed this up by launching the Official Site, and a TGS mini-site too (see source).
This revealed a little bit more about the game and more specifically the differences between the DS version and the Wii version. The main point is that they are basically identical, which is actually somewhat disappointing given the Wii's hardware capabilities in comparison to that of the DS.
The game is being run on the Pollux Engine which was designed specifically for cross-platform play, but they could have at least touched up the Wii version as it's essentially just a port of the DS version.

As you can see from the above screenshots, they are graphically very similar and the main point is that due to the whole "Dual Screen" aspect, the Wii version doesn't actually use the full-screen, which could get quite annoying.
So what is the incentive to buy the Wii version of this game? Well, currently it doesn't look like there is any. The DS version offers apparently everything that the Wii version does, you can play it online from anywhere with Wi-Fi and it actually uses the screens properly, unlike the Wii version.
It's also interesting to note that the two games will retail for exactly the same price in Japan (¥5,040).

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time Announced
(Posted: 01/10/2008) by Ronin90
In this month's edition of Jump Magazine in Japan, a new game in the Crystal Chronicles franchise has been announced which is going to be entitled Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time.
The game is set to be released on both the Nintendo Wii and the Nintendo DS, which means it will likely support some kind of inter-console connectivity, much like the original Crystal Chronicles did on the Nintendo Gamecube, with the Nintendo Gameboy Advance. The DS version is also being developed using the Pollux Engine.

For all those fans in doubt though, this isn't going to replace the Crystal Bearers, as that game is still scheduled to be released. This will just be another game added to the Crystal Chronicles franchise.
