Dissidia: Final Fantasy Q&A Session

09 May 2009 by Darryl
Dissidia: Final Fantasy Q&A Session

As mentioned in the previous three parts, Final Fantasy Union had the opportunity to interview Yoshinori Kitase, Dissidia's Producer, and Takeshi Arakawa, Dissidia's Director. The event took place in London, England and as well as interviewing the development staff, the opportunity to play the game was also offered. Please feel free to check out the full preview for Dissidia over at Gaming Union: Dissidia Nearing Western Release, Looks Very Solid.

Over the past few days, some important pieces of information have been shown from the interview, and below are links to those stories:

Dissidia II Dependant On Western Sales
No DLC Planned For Dissidia: Final Fantasy
New Characters In Western Dissidia, Amongst Other Additions

Here is the full transcript from the interview that was conducted:

(Also, feel free to discuss this interview on the forums)

Final Fantasy Union: Who came up with the original idea to make the game?

This is an idea originally, Nomura-san, who is the creative producer for Dissidia came up with when he was involved with Kingdom Hearts II.

Final Fantasy Union: How did the development time of the game compare with other games you've made? As obviously you've made quite a few.

I think it took longer than usual work, partly because we wanted to set up different rules for the battle part. So in order to establish the battle system it took us 2 years and on top of that it took another year to complete the RPG side, so 3 years overall.

Final Fantasy Union: The game has characters from every game in the series, was it difficult to integrate them all into the same story?

It was difficult at times. Obviously Dissidia has its own original story and the idea was that we chose one heroic character and one villain from all the FF games in the past and obviously there are lots and lots of characters we would like to choose, but we had to stick to the concept of this new game. So we chose the characters which would fit in better with the new game.

Final Fantasy Union: Following on from that, Shantotto and Gabranth were the last announced. Were they always planned to be in the game?

Those two characters you mentioned are the ones we really wanted to put in Dissidia, so the names were nominated. On the other hand, at that point we were unsure if we would have the time to do so, so we are very glad that we did eventually.

Final Fantasy Union: Which character do you like playing as the most?

The one I'm [Takeshi Arakawa] most fond of is Bartz from FFV, but the one I actually use is Firionel because he's an archer and that's quite cool.

Final Fantasy Union: Did the western audience influence the development of the game?

Yes, it did. We actually managed to get some analysis from our localisation team as well as our subsidiary companies like the one in London and Los Angeles. So we actually did adjust the original Japanese version, as I said before the Arcade mode has been added and also the game balance has been re-adjusted. For example, the tutorial in the Japanese version it takes about one hour, which we thought would be too long for western games, so it has been squashed down to 10 minutes.

Final Fantasy Union: As you said, the game was originally developed when you were working on Kingdom Hearts II. Were there any games outside of Square Enix that served as inspiration for its development?

Not particularly. There's not really any game that has inspired the creator or this game. I have worked on The World Ends With You and the RPG aspects of that game, such as wireless battles and other items, and those items can be seen in this game.

Final Fantasy Union: Obviously Square Enix have developed fighting games in the past such as Ehrgeiz and The Bouncer. Did this development help with Dissidia at all; did you learn anything from them?

According to the battle planning director (Mitsunori Takahashi), he was not inspired by fighting games we've created before. What he had in mind was the moment from Advent Children, when Sephiroth fights against Cloud.

Final Fantasy Union: Obviously there are a lot of unlockables in the game; will there be any extra unlockables in the Western version?

As in the Japanese version, we have the PP-Catalogue system which is there to be unlocked, and also we are going to issue passwords will enable you to unlock very strong characters, but no new characters will become available in the overseas version.

Final Fantasy Union: Will the Japanese PP-Codes work in the English version?

No, and the ones for US are different for EU as well.

Final Fantasy Union: You've mentioned there are some differences between the Japanese and Western versions; will there be any other differences?

You can see new abilities for the characters, which are only available in the overseas version. Also there are some characters which don't appear in any events in the Japanese version but they do in the western version.

Final Fantasy Union: So there will be a few more cameos?

Yes, that's right.

Final Fantasy Union: Final Fantasy XI was pioneering because it allowed people from all around the world to play with each other. Will Japanese Dissidia players be allowed to play against Western players online?

We really wanted to include that feature, but because the specs of the PSP are not suitable for online games, we had to abandon that idea.

Final Fantasy Union: In the Dissidia Ultimania guide, Tetsuya Nomura mentioned that he would like to produce a sequel to Dissidia: Final Fantasy, but said it's not possible at the present time. Will Square Enix seriously consider a sequel once the three Fabula Nova Crystallis titles are complete?

Obviously the game hasn't been released in either the US or Europe and we will have to wait and see how popular it will be. If it's successful obviously we'd like to make an attempt to make a sequel.

ViviMasterMage:
The storyline of all characters:

Hero: It's you!
Villian: You have character flaws!
Hero: He's right... ='(
Cosmos: Nah, you're cool!
Hero: Yeah I am!
Villian: NO!!!!

*end*

>> Sadly, that's true, isn't it? Each story was nearly identical in terms of plot, just the characters themselves were different. The cutscenes that were outside the heroes' stories were more interesting. I'm talking the ones that featured Chaos and Cosmos by themselves or discussing something with another hero or villain that isn't, "You can do it, " ~ Cosmos.

But, seriously, I thought the gameplay was excellent. Shame the stories were lacking.

I bought the game the day it came out, and I loved it. I spent the whole next month playing it every day. =3 I only used Onion Knight in his blue alternate costume, though. However, I did manage to train everyone to level 100.

That's what I did too ^_^. I found Onion knight quite a challenge to use, and I'm only on my 5th character to reach lv100. It takes a while, but it's worth it.
If possible, we should have our own Gaming Union competition for games like Dissidia during the Eurogamer expo xD.

However, I did manage to train everyone to level 100. The only thing I had left to do was to master abilities, but then I lost the game or something, so I don't have it anymore. >> I'm probably gonna buy it again sometime. Thank God PSP games have discs and save files instead of cartridges.
cloudff7pc Posted on May 10th, 2010, 2:21 pm (EST) by cloudff7pc
I haven't actually bought this game yet as my PSP was also stolen. How good is this game (aside from the fact that you can cross battle characters from different series)?
chrisH Posted on April 25th, 2010, 10:54 pm (EST) by chrisH
My old psp got stolen at a party awhile back and not too long ago i bought a psp3000. its not too back. But that meant i had to redo all of dissidia :'(
It BLEW BALLS!!! I lost bout three months of dissidia and all that grinding.... AHHH n now i have to get all my shit again for cloud!!
Though now with this game i got more stuff and knew alot better of what to do this second time around,
Dreams Posted on April 16th, 2010, 9:03 am (EST) by Dreams
Bought this last week, it's addicting and I love it :) I've completed Cloud, Squall, Tidus and Firion's stories so far. My play plan is hardcore, averaged about 45 battles a day so far. Wondering whether to go down to Casual or not but I consider myself hardcore :p
Skirr Posted on April 15th, 2010, 7:46 am (EST) by Skirr
I don't think they could have really done much more with the storyline than what they did. They just whittled the main storyline of the series - dark versus light - into a fighter.

Seriously, name me a fighting game with a complex and well-executed story. The game mechanics were addictive and that's all I wanted.

Also, shiny graphics.
RagingSkyKing Posted on April 12th, 2010, 8:42 pm (EST) by RagingSkyKing
:o Well thats weird.. Here in NZ most of the people including my friends who ARE FF fans somehow disappointed which made me very ANGRY >:[ I still havent played it but they complained something about the storyline being too lame andd dull... arghhh!!
Chaos Riku Posted on February 16th, 2010, 11:44 pm (EST) by Chaos Riku
Fun game, even if I'm having to play through The Chaos portions through again to be leveled up enough to kill Chaos. Squall's voice actor grates on my nerves, and...I'm just liking Cloud's voice less and less the more I hear it. I guess I would be okay without a FF VII remake if I can go without hearing him voice Cloud through the whole game. Bah.

Chaos's voice takes the cake though... I like getting beat down by Goliath.
thefenrir Posted on December 29th, 2009, 8:25 pm (EST) by thefenrir
I've played through the first story arc, but going through the 2nd is so tedious and repetitious in my opinion. I heard a colleague of mine said that this was the best FF game ever...if he'd said that to my face I would've laughed at him so hard xD

I find the story less than mediocre at best. It's not so bad in the first arc, but once I passed that I got so bored I just started grinding the characters. I didn't even bother to finish the story.

However, I will say that ...
Selcopa Posted on December 29th, 2009, 8:03 pm (EST) by Selcopa
Was a good game, I beat everything including Inward Chaos, but I haven't leveled everyone to 100 yet. All the good guys I have, but not the villians, not sure i will. But I do enjoy playing the highest level of Colleseum, against lvl 120+ enemies is pretty fun and challenging.

Astharis Posted on November 17th, 2009, 7:07 am (EST) by Astharis
Are you serious? I thought that all the characters in Dissidia were portrayed as exaggerated hollow caricatures of their former selves.

It's a lot of fun as a game for the franchise's fans (although it's not even RPG style, so that's still questionable), but I felt that it doesn't really stand apart from the original games.

Each to their own, I guess.
Mystic Phoenix Posted on November 16th, 2009, 11:42 pm (EST) by Mystic Phoenix
WOOHOOO!! just got Dissidia and I'm done with Tidus, Cecil and Cloud's storyline in 4 hours. The story isn't as bad as I thought it would be, from my point of view the story seems to bring out the emotional side of the characters, its heart warming
Darryl Posted on October 23rd, 2009, 12:02 pm (EST) by Darryl
Well, even in the game they don't really do anything to aid the villains. They're just confused.
Kiyoshi-Ryuu Posted on October 17th, 2009, 4:32 pm (EST) by Kiyoshi-Ryuu
Am I the only person still having something of a 'WTF?' moment over Jecht and Golbez being two of the Villians in Dissidia? I mean, I can see *why* they are but considering the rest are kind of like *the* main villians ... it kind of throws me a little. Anyone else think this?

That is quite an old post you've chosen, KOFF, and at the time there was not a great amount of information concerning Dissidia. Yes, I have played a fair few Final Fantasies and now I know what the game is about I am much more interested in it.

My friends are abuzz about this upcoming PSP game, but I don't really get why. It just seems to me like it's a cheesy Tekken-esque game with a jumbled up story. I am sure I am missing the point but my friends haven't come up with a decent comeback to explain the game's point or relevance. Could someone please tell me where I'm going wrong?

What is the deal with the limited edition bundles with the Dissidia PSP's?
I am hoping to buy one for my fan collection but i need to know a few things first
Is the Japanese PSP able to play our games? (U.K), i am to understand it is region free!!
Is there definetly no U.S release for the limited edition?
Would the Crisis Core PSP released in the U.K mean that we may get the Dissidia one?

yes it is because i played warriors orichi and thats a chineese and jp game any way dissdia will have a english version

Erell:

I won't be able to buy a le PSP, but I still hope, that there will be one. CC Limited Edition and a european Square Enix Shop was a sign, that SE starts to take european gamers seriously.

I hope they do, i remember buying the Crisis Core PSP :)
I was so happy, all i need is Advent Children Complete on my PSP and i'll have the FFVII collection on my Limited Edition PSP, then i shall rule the world MWUHAHAHAHA

I hope the Dissidia PSP will be in silver though :o
I also did a little research and it appears the Japanese PSP's will not play music or videos from NA, UK and EU, unless someone knows differently?

Yes, it is. Or better it should be. My PSP (EU) is able to play JP and US games, so a JP PSP should be able to play our games.

Is there definetly no U.S release for the limited edition?
Well, SE didn't say much about it, as far as I know. I think, we should wait and see. The release is in August and announcements of a limited editions always appear shotly before the release date (like SO4 for example).

No, it has nothing to do with FFVIII. It's quite simple: FF - charakters were called by Cosmos, because she needs their help. And they'll stay in her dimension untill the world order is restored again. Period.
terals Posted on June 10th, 2009, 6:47 am (EST) by terals
Has anyone idea how the story explains how the different characters are brought together. I thought one way would be to say that at the end of FF8 where there was the time compression thing where time just seemed to be merging together all the characters from throughout the series could've been brought to the same point in time. Anyone think this is a good idea or just stupid?

yeah your right about the price being high. lol
i like that $200 deal, but i really really hate the silver PSP. if they release a box set with a black one sure, but not silver. (Just a personal preference.) and it has no insignia on it anywhere like the Japan PSP does so the system itself is nothing special. i would rather trade my old psp in for cash, import a blue PSP and pay $250 then buy the game separately. Well we don't know its not totally impossible still. Although they've told us all the characters that are going to be in the game. It doesn't mean they haven't ruled out "unlockables" either through downloadable content or in the case of Zack maybe an alternative costume for Cloud since they are practically identical but yeah just clutching at straws here.

OK yeah they're identical. :P

Is this forum like, outdated or something? Dissidia has been out for quite a while and quite a lot of western people already beat it.
I, for instance, did.
What can I say, the gameplay is the bset the PSP has ever seen, meh, nothing can match crisis core's story until serious storyline competitors show up like BBS and Agito, but the gameplay is definitely amazing.

Darryl Posted on March 2nd, 2009, 8:45 am (EST) by Darryl
Eurogamer have just done an import review in which they gave the game 8/10. I think It'll be pretty interesting to see how western reviewers actually perceive the game on the whole.

hmm... that may be a possibility, I skimmed through the tutorial gameplay videos I found and saw several cameo appearances. I didn't see her, but then again, as I said, I skimmed though them. The characters I did see though were the little people in FF3 (I forget what they were called :( at least in the original Famicom version anyway) Guluf, Kirle, a scholar from FF5, a black mage, Vicks/Wedge from FF6, the imp from FF6, Quistis, Irvine, Vivi, and Steiner.

I imported it and so far the battles are epic! It is pretty easy to pick up and play but also complicated. I just wish I knew how to read Japanese.

Have you seen any cameos? I heard that Rikku is in the game.

You must be a hardcore fan to import it without being able to read Japanese. Respect though.

I think I might enjoy your infrequent outbursts, Zero. ;)

This is a disclaimer: The following post is out of my usual style of writing. It in no way indicates more about me than I personally feel you need to know, and is mostly over the excitement of watching that trailer. Please do not expect any changes to my ways to stem from this 1 post, as it is a rare outburst for me.

OMG!!!! THAT GAME LOOKS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! I NEED TO GET A PSP BEFORE THIS GAME COMES OUT!!!!!! If I can find a version of that trailer with subtitles, I thin...

Square Enix have released a new Dissidia trailer which is from this year's TGS.

I think (and hope) that downloadable content should be very much a part of Dissidia, and so alternative costumes that are different characters would be really nice to be able to unlock or download.

Well we don't know its not totally impossible still. Although they've told us all the characters that are going to be in the game. It doesn't mean they haven't ruled out "unlockables" either through downloadable content or in the case of Zack maybe an alternative costume for Cloud since they are practically identical but yeah just clutching at straws here.

woooph...
you know! it is better that zack was in dissidia huh?!
i love him so much...
it means... there is no way for seeing zack in this game?! no way at all?????

Well, apparently the story is going to be pretty full-on. So it might be worth looking into if only for the story.
Frass Posted on October 26th, 2008, 5:12 pm (EST) by Frass
It's to be expected that it's going to have a jumbled up story, it is a fighting game with characters who come from what are essentially (partially confirmed by FFXII's Gilgamesh, I'll go into it if asked) from different dimensions. I think it's going to be ruined for a lot of people if they are expecting differently just because it has characters who come from games known for storylines. Kind of like how a lot of people hated Spirits Within not because it sucked as a stand-alone movie, but beca...

Well, the press will be treated to a 6 player demo at TGS, so hopefully more insight about the product will be posted around.
gilburtgtr Posted on October 5th, 2008, 11:27 am (EST) by gilburtgtr
That's what I mean. There are just loads of mixed messages about the game. I suppose it is always likely to be a hit in Japan, but as you say, I guess the final release will tell all...

I don't think anyone apart from the media really knows if the gameplay is actually going to work. From the gameplay videos I've seen, it doesn't look overly promising to be honest.

The press have been lavishing praise on it though, so I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Must be slower than me at doing content then ;)

Man, Square Enix do love their flash websites. I wonder why they've only put up profiles for 8 characters, then they've announced a lot more.
