Final Fantasy Shaping Up For Big Things In '09

(Posted: 05/01/2009) by Ronin90

As far as things go, 2008 was actually quite a busy year for Final Fantasy, but the majority of the coverage took place on the handheld consoles. While this is great, Final Fantasy (especially the main series) has always been known for pushing the graphical boundaries, and while the PSP and DS are fine pieces of hardware, they can't really compete with the might of the PS3 and Xbox 360.

That's where 2009 comes in. It's time for the big boys to flex their muscles and hopefully they will be given licence to do that this year. That still remains to seen though, as the 360 might not get its chance to shine dependant on release dates, but here's hoping anyway.

We've outlined the Final Fantasy games you should be looking forward to this year, so check out the list after the jump.

Final Fantasy XIII DLC Will Not Happen

(Posted: 24/12/2008) by Ronin90

When Final Fantasy XIII was announced on the Xbox 360 earlier this year, one of the main questions people had revolved around the utilisation of Xbox Live, and to a lesser extend the Playstation Network. Would they allow for online modes and perhaps Downloadable Content (DLC) to enhance the story?

From the perspective of DLC, the answer is simply, no. In a recent interview, Yoshinori Kitase revealed that they have absolutely no plans for downloadable content within Final Fantasy XIII and his reasoning is actually quite refreshing.

He claims that they plan to have Final Fantasy XIII perfect for its 2009 launch in Japan and that if DLC was needed, that would mean that the product they launched with wasn't perfect. So, this pretty much confirms that there will be no expansions to this game, however, due to the nature of the Fabula Nova Crystallis franchise, that doesn't rule out a sequel or spinoff.

New Final Fantasy XIII Gameplay Footage Screens

(Posted: 20/12/2008) by Ronin90

Some impressive new scans have surfaced on the internet from the current edition of V-Jump Magazine, which show off some of Final Fantasy XIII's free-roaming battle mechanic.

Like Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy XIII will not have random battles and instead, players will be able to choose whether they interact with enemies. Should they choose to, they will instantly be engaged in a battle, which is shown in the first scan.

Square Enix Set To Astound At Jump Festa 2009?

(Posted: 17/12/2008) by Ronin90

Although Jump Festa doesn't have the same kind of worldwide recognition as the Tokyo Game Show (due to it primarily being a Manga Expo), it has still pulled a few surprises in the past. However, Square Enix are notorious for using this event to show off world exclusive material and with Jump Festa 2009 happening on the 20th and 21st of December, now is the perfect time to take a look at what we should expect from Square Enix at this year's event.

First off, Square Enix have only confirmed that they will be showing nine games at this year's event, and only two of them are Final Fantasy related. They are Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time. This was expected, but it's quite surprising that they aren't using the opportunity to plug Dissidia: Final Fantasy even more, despite all the promotion that they have been doing.

Vanilla Unveiled In New Final Fantasy XIII Scan

(Posted: 17/12/2008) by Ronin90

Although she has previously been known by either Pig Tails Girl or Nomchan, this mystery character now has a name....sort of. It was unveiled today in a Shonen Jump scan that her first name is Vanilla, but the rest of her name still remains shrouded in mystery.

Some speculate that another part of the name might be Dia, or Diai, while there is also a third part which is also causing confusion; some believe it may be Wolva or Olva. Either way, it will probably be announced sooner or later, perhaps in the next issue of Famitsu which should be hitting relatively soon?

Cloud Message Gives Us A Peak At Square Enix's Inner Workings

(Posted: 12/12/2008) by Ronin90

So, Cloud Message was released to the world today and scans were leaked onto the internet yesterday. As predicted, these scans were pretty much exactly the same things we'd already seen before. However, there was something of note present within the scans, a peak at how Square Enix brainstorm for the games.

It's not often that games developers show off how they formulate their ideas, but it's certainly interesting to see in this case. Even though the teams are all working independantly, they all seem to have a similar approach to jotting down their ideas and sticking actual artwork to their boards.

7 Final Fantasy Games Coming In 2009

(Posted: 02/12/2008) by Ronin90

Note: Unfortunately the source of this story has come out and said this isn't an official list, but a likely list of titles. Hopefully it still comes true though and sorry for any confusion.

Earlier today, Square Enix unveiled their release line-up for 2009 which included 28 titles. Unfortunately, only 7 of these titles are related to the world of Final Fantasy, and they are:-

- Final Fantasy XIII (Playstation 3)
- Final Fantasy Versus XIII (Playstation 3)
- Final Fantasy Agito XIII (Playstation Portable)
- Dissidia: Final Fantasy (Playstation Portable)
- Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time (Wii, DS)
- Final Fantasy IV: The After (Mobile)
- Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Complete (Blu-ray)

It's great that they are releasing all three Fabula Nova Crystallis titles in the same year, but they have seemingly merged Japanese, North American and European release dates all into one, so it's difficult to tell if any will see the light of day outside of Japan this year.

Cloud Message: New Information Highly Unlikely

(Posted: 30/11/2008) by Ronin90

Final Fantasy XIII news has been slow recently and even though speculation about the famed 'Cloud Message' was initially centered around Final Fantasy VII, it hasn't taken long for fansites to attempt to capitalise on it by regurgitating news and claiming that this book will provide great things. The question is, should we actually care?

The short answer is no. Unlike the newly announced Re: DVD, Cloud Message is purely a book. This means there will be no new trailers and no new news. What will probably be in the book? Artwork, which we've more than likely already seen. Why is it likely that we've seen it anyway? Because the book features ten other topics (nine of which are games) and there is no real need for Square Enix to include something new when they have so much content that they can fill the book up with.

Multi-Disc Final Fantasy XIII On 360 Looking Likely

(Posted: 23/11/2008) by Ronin90

Anyone who bought The Last Remnant on Thursday will have noticed one blatantly obvious thing, it comes on two discs. Now, this might not be that concerning to too many people, but it could hint that this could be the way things will be done in the future.

As everyone is now aware, Final Fantasy XIII is being released on the Xbox 360, as part of Square Enix's new "let's make money" strategy. It's more than likely that Final Fantasy XIII will dwarf The Last Remnant in size, and if they couldn't compress that game down, it is likely that they will struggle for Final Fantasy XIII as well. The only thing that might discount this, is that The Last Remnant was developed using an external engine (Unreal 3), whereas Final Fantasy XIII is being developed using Square Enix's own Crystal Tools.

Final Fantasy XIII Featured In New Re: DVD

(Posted: 22/11/2008) by Ronin90

Amazon.jp have just listed a new DVD which is being produced by Entertain and will potentially feature some previously unseen media relating to Final Fantasy XIII.

The DVD itself is called Re: as it's a recollection of the DKΣ3713 event which took place earlier in the year and it's called Re: because it's a reply to the event by the developers who attended.

Final Fantasy Re: DVD The DVD is said to be approximately 60 minutes long and will feature Final Fantasy artwork and images taken from the world's highest mountain, which have apparently been used to build some of Final Fantasy XIII's virtual landscape.

Some of Square Enix's other titles will also be featured on the video, so if you want to import it, it'll set you back ¥2,625 and it is released on the 13th of December.
