Final Fantasy XIII Dispels Negativity
Posted on 2009/10/25 by Kyle
With it's release in Japan set for December 17th, and few events between now and then, Tokyo Game Show 2009 was really the last big event Square Enix had to showcase Final Fantasy XIII. With one of the longest development times in Final Fantasy's history, Square Enix promising to revolutionize the RPG genre with the game, and so many mounting doubts about the game, Final Fantasy XIII had a lot to prove at the event. Gaming Union got some hands-on time with the game at TGS 2009, and it's time to compare and contrast to see if player concerns were really met by Square Enix.
For the last year in particular FFXIII has had gone through an equal amount of hype and doubt among gamers. Starting with the announcement of moving the title to the Xbox 360, concerns continued the mount as more in-game action was shown, and Square Enix's answers at the time not particularly cooling the situation. Gameplay and graphics have long been called into question, so when we got our hands on FFXIII at TGS 2009 we paid extra attention to see if the concerns are really substantiated or not.

Square Enix Wins Court Battle In South Korea
Posted on 2009/08/05 by Ronin90
In 2007, a Korean company called Fantom started distributing a music video (Sonata of Temptation) by K-Pop star IVY that contained an unauthorized live-action scene-for-scene adaptation of a scene from Advent Children.
Square Enix filed an injunction and the Seoul Central District Court ordered Fantom to cease distribution and sales of the video in April, 2007. In March of the following year, it then decided that Fantom should pay approximately $250,000 in damages to Square Enix.
Fantom appealed the decision and the case was taken to the Seoul High Court. However, Square Enix were the victors again, and the damages needing to be paid were increased to approximately $325,000.

In the press release it is claimed that they are continuously monitoring the internet, with selected sites (not mentioned) being earmarked as specifically garnering their attention.
Should websites be found to have the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete download available, they can be looking forward to communication from Square Enix which will initially come in the form of emails or letters.

Final Fantasy XIII Demo Coming To North America Afterall?
Posted on 2009/04/18 by Ronin90
Following the successful joint release of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete and the Final Fantasy XIII Trial Version in Japan, fans have been clamouring to get their hands on the demo. Previously Square Enix stated that the North American version of the release wouldn't feature the demo, so anyone who wanted to play it has had to wrestle with customs fees and import it. However, a new statement from Square Enix could contradict their previous statements.
When talking about the North American version of Advent Children Complete (currently scheduled for release on the 2nd of June 2009), Square Enix said that it would include an "Exclusive preview of Final Fantasy XIII". Now, this could be one of two things; either Square Enix are giving North American gamers some exclusive new trailers not released to the public, or they're thinking about packing in the demo for North American gamers too.

Who Cares If The Final Fantasy XIII Demo Is 5GB?
Posted on 2009/04/17 by Shawn
According to various news sources, the size of the Final Fantasy XIII demo stands at about 5.09GB, 256 MB of that being a firmware update for the PlayStation 3. This, of course, spread the idea that the Xbox 360 version will be downgraded from the PlayStation 3 version, or the PlayStation 3 version will be downgraded to run on the Xbox 360, due to the Xbox 360 using the DVD format (around 6.5GB due to copyright protecting), compared to the 50GB Blu-ray currently has.
But really, who really cares if the demo is 5GB?

Final Fantasy XIII Demo A Complete Waste Of Time
Posted on 2009/04/13 by Ronin90
Anyone who's even vaguely interested in Final Fantasy XIII will know that in a couple of days Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete comes out in Japan, and with it comes a demo of Final Fantasy XIII. It's been talked up for quite a while, but some of Square Enix's recent statements really question the validity of the demo itself as to be honest, it now seems fairly redundant.
To go straight for the jugular, Square Enix claimed that the demo isn't even reflective of the game's current build, as it was built using an older version of the engine that was used during 2008. So, they're effectively saying that the experience offered in the demo doesn't represent what the actual game will be like... so, what exactly is the point in showing it to people? Many people buying it will probably use the demo to judge whether they will buy the end product and if it's not a great experience, it might change their minds (Haze anyone?).
This does also lead nicely on to the second point, why release the demo so far in advance of the game's actual release date? Square Enix haven't even tied themselves down to a quarter yet, so the game isn't that near completion. They've done the same in the past too, as they released the Final Fantasy XII Demo a year before its release in combination with Dragon Quest VIII... spot the similarity?
More after the jump.
