A Week In Final Fantasy XIV: You Don't Mess With Funguars

Why hello there! It's my turn now to regale you with stories of our adventures from Final Fantasy XIV and this week was rather eventful! Not only did I manage to progress slightly in my initial role (Archer), but we also ventured outside of the Gridanian city walls in search of adventure and of course, new experiences.

As an avid Final Fantasy XI player, I am constantly reminded when playing Final Fantasy XIV of how much hand-holding there is. Anyone who attempted to complete quests on Final Fantasy XI will fondly (or perhaps not so much) remember attempting to complete quests. You would often have to have a separate guide telling you what to do and where to go, as the in-game options were either very cryptic or flat-out useless. It's something that has been completely changed within Final Fantasy XIV.

Now, upon selecting a quest from a highlighted NPC, you will be given very clear guidelines about what you need to do and where you need to go to do it. Which brings me onto my first task within the Archers Guild - slaying critters!

For this task, both Lauren and I had to fulfill the same objective, so it gave us a chance to team-up and speed through. As with the early in-city quests, the first couple of quests that take place outside of the city are pretty straight-forward. In this instance, it wasn't just a case of running from A to B, it was a case of killing a small number of monsters to prove your worth; it's not exactly ground-breaking, but it does the job of helping you to become better acquainted with how the game plays.

For me, everything is pretty straight forward at this stage in my development as an Archer. Aside from ensuring I don't attack too many things at once, it's pretty much a case of hitting the attack button for Heavy Shot, unless it procs Straight Shot, in which case that gets hit instead. Towards the end of the session I started picking up some new moves, such as an attack that deals poison (Venomous Bite), as well as an ability.

It's important to note the different between the two here. You'll notice that in the video, when I attack, certain timers appear on moves 1, 2 and 4. These are all connected because they are "Weapon Skills". Moves 3 and 5 are abilities, which means they instead have their own timers that are independent. Their use can also be situational. For example, Misery's End (Move #5), can only be used if the enemy's HP is below 25 percent. The idea is that you are able to finish them a bit quicker, but it has a 12 second cooldown, as opposed to the standard 2.5 seconds of the weapon skills.

This all helps to add an extra layer to combat, forcing you to pay attention to the different states of play. And this is only right at the beginning of our Final Fantasy XIV adventure. You can be sure that later down the line, things will get much more complicated!

As you can tell from the title of the episode, we rather enjoyed killing the Funguars. However, those damn Opo-Opos caused us a little bit of grief! At one point we got a little bit ahead of ourselves and we saw our first fatality... yes, fatality (insert This is The End reference). It did serve a purpose though, as it helped Lauren become a bit better acquainted with her healing spells! It was my fault too though, as I just attacked far too many things - oops!

Be sure to check back next time when we take on the next batch of quests and hopefully progress a bit more with the story! Oh, and don't forget to check out the video below of this week's adventures.

Darryl was playing Final Fantasy before he was even born - quite a feat! Often very opinionated on the Final Fantasy franchise, you will often find him musing about small details. Feel free to follow him on Twitter.
