Yamski hailed from the Icicle Inn and was a good friend of Holzoff. 20 years before the events of final Fantasy VII, the two of them decided that they would try and climb the local mountain called Gaea's Cliff.

While initially the climb starts to go well the pair arrive at some complications and a decision has to be made. There is too much weight on the line and they either both plummet or one of them has to sacrifice themself so the other can live.

Yamski decides to take the second option and cuts his rope without Holzoff's knowledge so that Holzoff can survive.
