Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus has only two playable characters, although one is only used for a brief period of time. For the vast majority of the game, Vincent Valentine is the only playable character and thus, he is the main protagonist. Yuffie Kisaragi does support him during key moments of the game though, perhaps to make them seem more integral to the series than their appearance in Final Fantasy VII originally suggested.
Villains
There are numerous villains in Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus, but the two main villains are Professor Hojo and Omega Weapon. The Tsviets (seen below) bring the total number of villains in featured in the game up to eight.

The Tsviets are an elite group of soldiers that come from DeepGround. There are only five members during Dirge of Cerberus, but there were originally six members, all with unique colours that are related to their name.
Minor Characters
Dirge of Cerberus saw a lot of characters return from the original game and also saw the inclusion of others who had been touched upon before. This enabled some things to be explained more fully, such as Lucrecia Crescent's role in the overall story.
